Teach him the basics of magic. He has no foundation for anything he does, which is why his projections fail. Have him pick up history books, read, and study so next time he decides to come at me for whatever reason, his weapons aren't failures.

If he balks, tell him he can't possibly protect you as it is and it's embarrassing to rely on someone else.
